Unfortunately, after some Web research I found out that on the VW wheels, the 100 in the "5x100" spec refers to the "Pitch Circle Diameter" (PCD) or what we Americans commonly call the "bolt circle" -- the diameter of a circle that runs through the centers of all the lug bolts.

On Sonett soccerballs, the 100mm dimension is the "chord" -- the distance between the centers of any two adjacent lug bolts. After brushing up on basic trig, I was able to verify that a 5-bolt wheel with a 100mm chord will have a PCD of 170mm.

I found an interesting site, http://www.german-wheels.com, on which you can search a huge collection of wheels based on width, diameter, PCD, offset, or various other criteria. Unfortunately, their selection of PCDs only goes up to 130mm.

So, sorry to raise anyone's hopes unnecessarily. I guess if I want wider wheels on my Sonett, I'm back to the concept of getting a set of steel 96 rims and having them widened by a wheel shop...
