new pump not pumping

This is probably a simple thing but before I move on to my next hatchet job, I am hoping that someone has had this problem before. I "believe" my mechanical fuel pump gave out a few weeks back. I could find no one in town that could find a match so opted to go to an electric model. The car started up fine and ran for a few minutes. I turned the car off to put everything back together and haven't gotten it started since. The pump is running and seems to choose when to actually suck fuel. There are times when the thing just shoots fuel and others when it does nothing but make noise. Even when it pumps fine through about 6 inches of hose, it will not pump to the carb. I figured the pump was bad and decided to use the mechanical one on my second sonett that runs well. Same deal. THe pump just shoots stuff out but the carb still isn't getting fuel. I've changed filters, changed all rubber hoses, removed the filter altogether and still nothing. I put the pump back in the other sonett and all is great. I'm stumped to say the least.
My next move is to take out the fuel line itself and make sure there are no obstructions but even this seems silly seeing as fuel flows out of that tube at a good rate it just doesn't seem to want to get sucked up by that pump.
please help.....
