Bob's right about everything. But, you can get home with a stripped balance shaft gear if you are in extremis. Since the water pump is not working, you just drive until the temperature goes high, put it in neutral, shut it off and coast to the side of the road. It will cool down enough in 10-15 minutes to make another start, run a mile or two and repeat. I've had this happen twice, driven home 10-20 miles and rebuilt the engines without any signs of damage. It helps to have a good battery also.
And, MSS used to sell a nylon balance shaft gear. I expect it would last as long as the engine.
