Bill,
I don't know if you are trying to maintain originality, but if you just want something that works, some GM one-wire alternators with the built-in regulator do just fine. I don't know exactly what years, but J.C.Whitney lists it as GM-type one-wire alternator in 60, 80 and 80 (chromed) amp capacities ($70-$100). I bought one a few years ago, thinking I could make some modifications and get around the high cost of servicing the alternator and the VR. When it came it was almost a twin to the Bosch. The base was a little narrower, so I had to use a washer or two, but it went in fine. And, I had to swap the fans (they fit). The GM alternator is built to turn opposite from the Bosch; the electrons don't care, but they like to stay cool.
I forget what wiring modifications are needed. I have to figure it out new each time, but it's not difficult. Sometimes the field is a little slow to flash, and I have to rev the engine to get it going, but after that it's fine.
I guess this is a common enough GM altenator that you could take a look at any auto parts store or auto-electric shop to verify before ordering.
Hope this is useful.
John
