Although the operation of the rear suspension is rather sophisticated and clever, the *mechanics* are very simple -- just a rubber-mounted center pivot for the axle tube, which allows some movement in all directions, plus two trailing links to keep the movement of the pivot from being able to steer the back end of the car! (And the springs and shocks, of course.)
With so few pieces, it shouldn't be able to go much out of alignment unless something is worn, bent or damaged.
If both wheels skew the same direction, e.g. like this
| | <-fronts
/ / <-rears
(please excuse crude ASCII diagram, was the best I can do) my first thought would be to suspect one of the trailing arms -- the arm itself, or its bushings, or its attachments to the tube or body. If any of these is worn or bent enough to allow the arm to change its effective length, the axle will move around the center pivot so that the wheels point off-center.
If the wheels "toe in" in opposite directions...
| | <-front
/ \ <-rear
...the axle tube itself may be bent or damaged. I know that SAAB offered a beefed-up tube and trailing arms in the Sport & Rally catalogs for competition purposes, so apparently failures to these components weren't completely unknown in hard driving.
