I like Kansas' approach to negotiating! Don't know what else to tell you, though, as it's really your call. A few points:
-- Lug bolts for those soccerball mags are hard to get (although finding ONE isn't as tough as finding a whole set!)
-- You didn't say whether the softball-size rust hole was behind the front or rear passenger-side tire. Front is more serious -- the sills (enclosed sections under the doors) provide much of the structural stiffness of the passenger compartment, and rust damage here weakens the car. That doesn't necessarily make it a showstopper, just keep it in mind as something that will need to be fixed. It's really hard to find a *completely* rust-free Sonett (a cheap one, anyway) unless somebody's already gone through and renovated it, so you have to figure some welding will be needed on almost any 'project' car you buy.
As long as you keep in mind that $500 (or whatever) is just going to be the admission price to what could be a long-running performance, and if you're comfortable with that, it still sounds like a strong potential project car (probably with the accent on 'project' for the first several months at least.)
Good luck, whatever you decide...
