Top-o'-the-head candidates in cases of noise only while turning are the differential and/or the CV joints. If it's a steady whirr rather than a clunk, my first guess would be the diff, but that IS only a guess.
You can't be too surprised at a 32-year-old car showing some wear in these areas, so the trick is deciding whether it's a so-what noise or a gotta-fix-it-now noise. An experienced ear is the best guide; I realize that if you had easy access to an experienced ear, you wouldn't have posted your problem here, but what you're trying to make here is a judgement call -- i.e., how worn is TOO worn -- and to make good judgements you need a good judge!
I know there are measurements you can make to find out the degree of wear, but most of them involve taking the driveline apart, which is probably what you're trying to avoid in the first place. Maybe one of the experts here has a quick-and-dirty "field test"...?
