Greetings
Sounds like "typical" ring and pinion noise. Does your speedometer jump
at speed a few mph or during speed changes? The speedo gear is on the other side of the pinion shaft. Try driving without the insulation in
the car. The noises will become more pronouced and easier to pin-point.
My car produces this whine but at highway speeds the engine/exhaust noise
washes it out (mss exhaust w/ 36" glass pack). I've run this way for
10k miles. I was told it wasn't too bad..it just seemed worse since
I did not have any noise insulation (I was redoing the insulation).
If the whine gets worse, get it rebuilt before you ring and pinion go..
sonett R&Ps are rare since they are geared higher.
If you think its the wheel bearings..go for a drive and then check the
temp of the ends of the axles. If you haven't braked much, you should be
able to touch the end of the axle (or use a wet towel just in case it is
bad and might burn you). Since I had access to a thermocouple probe, I
used it. I had a 9000 with a wheel bearing which fell apart. The ball bearings where blued and broken in half. NOT GOOD at all.
