You need a complete car, number one. No missing ANYTHING. You should avoid a Sonett that has had a collision, period. The chassis is like swiss cheese, lightweight and not easily mendable. Everything needs to WORK. Those little parts are very hard to find, and expensive when you do.
A QUIET gearbox is pure bliss. Freewheel should be WORKING. It tells you it is a sound gearbox if the freewheel is operational. No rust.
Basic 'buyers beware' stuff, only keep in mind these are odd little cars- you will not be able to stroll into Ed's Auto Parts and find much except plugs. SAAB does not support these cars at all. I suggest a low mileage car from someone in a club like NESC. Yes they are more spendy. But some of the most basic repairs can empty your wallet and your desire for the car. Sonetts like to "rain-IN" that is the window seals are real rubber, and deteriorate in our atmosphere easily. The chassis is poorly undercoated, and prone to rust. The GRP body is light, tough, and explodes to scar tissue on impact- not cheap to fix. The hydraulics need love, again real rubber but with a British twist. And there is the Lucas electrics.... What more to say?
The cars are eye catching, sexy, very exciting to drive and fit in a small garage. If you drive one, you will understand WHY folks love them. Hey, a generic CRX will blow it away. But with the proper tuning and upgrades- the Sonett will do very well. That's my two bits. -Jeff
