Daniel is right, if you (or some previous owner) installed a non-standard carb, you will have had to 'improv' something to get the air cleaner on. The air cleaner should fit pretty well on a standard FoMoCo, however. It may wiggle a bit, because the bridge piece in the carb throat isn't totally rigid, but that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't sealing up. If yours won't fit down very well on the carb or seems to have 'way too much play, try taking it off and looking into the hole that fits over the carb. There's supposed to be a rubber O-ring inside to seal it. If this O-ring is missing or torn up, it could be what's keeping the air cleaner from fitting properly.
I keep thinking I should cut away the end of the 'snorkel' section, attach hoses to the tubes, and route them to some kind of remote air filter housing in the rear section of the engine compartment -- that would take some of the weight off the air cleaner, so it would sit better, and also would allow me to use any kind of air filter I want, such as a K&N. But I haven't gotten around to doing this yet... still, if anyone else wants to have a go...
