Chris,
Re carb, on a cold start the engine fires up fantastic but takes a while to fire up when warm and left a couple of mins?? And then it spits and sputters at around 500 revs until you open the throttle a couple of times? If this sounds familiar then I wouldn't really recommend checking the float level because you'll find it is perfect. And you'll probably find the jets are perfect as well! I've had (and still got!) this problem and the only thing I can put it down to is hot petrol. Yes I know it sounds ridiculous, but it seems that once the float chamber has been replenished with cooler petrol the engine runs sweeter. It's almost as if the heat from the thermo housing, which is directly below the float chamber and much nearer than the FoMoCo carb, rises into the chamber and basically causes the petrol to either fumigate or explode before it should do.
But if you come up with the fix I'd love to hear what it is!
Glyn
