The Sonett is probably a bit better than most old sports cars, especially the '73-'74 models with impact beams in the doors (look for hook on bottom of door and flat loop on door jamb that it hooks into.) There's also a hoop around the windshield frame and steel inserts bonded into the fiberglass over the doors, plus the visible rollbar behind the seats.
However, all this is a moot point if you're hit by a significantly bigger, heavier vehicle... but that's true of anything you might drive. (Get in the way of one of the gravel trucks that tear along the roads around here, and your vehicle is instantly a metal Dorito no matter WHAT it is -- Yukon, Suburban, Hummer, doesn't matter. A loaded gravel truck weighs upward of 70,000 lbs, which is more than a medium tank.)
So, basically, anything you might do to your Sonett is basically just a fig leaf for your insecurities in the impact-protection department. It IS possible to do a welded-in roll cage that doesn't make it too hard to get in and out -- I saw some pictures on Satch Carlson's web site, I think -- but there's still not a lot of room between the cage and your body. Also remember that a rollcage can be MORE dangerous than not unless you wear an SA-rated helmet... bare noggin not standing up well to repeated banging against rollcage tubes...
