-- Effects of V6 swap on the handling: they're all bad. The Sonett is pretty nose-heavy even with the V4; hanging two more cylinders' worth of engine out in front of the front wheels just makes the situation worse. Also don't forget that the torque capacity of the transaxle is limited.
-- V4 power potential: The factory Saab 96 rally cars made a reliable 160hp. You can't get quite that much out of a Sonett because the low hood line limits what kind of induction system you can have (the rally cars had a cross-ram manifold with dual side-draft Webers.) Jack Lawrence of Motor Sport Services gets 150hp or more out of his race Sonetts and will sell you all the parts to duplicate this (or build an engine for you.) 150hp in an 1800-lb car is enough to give you fairly frisky performance, so I don't think a V6 conversion would be worth the bother. (If you just gotta swap engines, try a Mazda rotary...)
-- Problem areas: Rust is by far the biggest. The transaxle and the brake lines are probably the second and third most common trouble spots, but these are comparatively easy to fix. Basically it's a very simple car without a lot to go wrong with it. Mechanical parts can be challenging to find but they're out there; the hard-to-find parts tend to be things such as glass, body hardware, and interior trim pieces, so when shopping for a restoration candidate you might want to choose a car that's complete but needs mechanical work over one that's a strong runner but has missing or damaged bodywork or glass.
