Flywheel lightening

Has anyone had experience lightening their flywheel?
I have read that most are lightened to 11 3/4 pounds or so. Taking off 5 lbs.
Is this done by turning off the the thickness , alone?
or is drilling used also?
I would like to lighten mine now that it is off and I am awaiting my clutch parts. But I don't want to jeopordise strength and reliability.
Any suggestions?
