Drill holes at the ends of any cracks to keep them from spreading, then patch from the inside with fiberglass cloth and resin.
Fill large scratches or cracks with body filler. Sand the car, feather edge any chips and prime with a primer/surfacer. Wet sand after priming then go over the car and fill any imperfections with glazing putty (Nitrostan). sand until smooth.
On Corvettes the factory used to spray 3-4 coats of gray primer/surfacer then 2 coats of red primer/surfacer. Then wet sand all of the red off with 600 grit. This will take care of any small scratches. Wet sand with 1200 grit then apply the top coats.
This may sound simple...actually it is....it's just time consuming.
