Ideas:

Clogged idle jet - when you had the carb "done" this could have dislodged crud that lodged in the jet.

Air leak - if the carb was removed for rebuilding, it might have been reinstalled leaving a leak (e.g. crush gasket at carb base is now too crushed.)

Contaminated gas - You say it died at the gas station; I assume you were putting gas in it? If the tank is full of rust flakes/other crud (common on old Sonetts that have sat unused a long time) filling the tank will stir up all this gunk and then it can clog the fuel pickup, main fuel filter, filter screen at the pump, and/or passages in the carb. If it was running OK until you put gas in it, this would be my first guess.
