Subject: What to do with this car?
=================
Hi, all - hope your holidays are going well.
I have a 92 SAAB 900s - 4door, auto, silver blue, blue leather interior.
The required repairs have gotten to the thousands (mostly labor) so I am
getting another car. The question is, what is the best thing to do with this
car? It has 168000 miles on it. The exterior is in pretty good shape - it's
been garaged the whole time and a couple of fender benders were repaired
well. The interior is good except for the driver's seat, which is pulling at
the seams. It isn't separated, so probably could be cosmetically fixed with
some color. Two new back tires; front ones are a year or so old. Power
windows, doors, sunroof still work well.
Here's the other side. It needs brake work - the ABS 'master cylinder'
needs to be replaced (I'm just repeating things as I understood them, so
forgive any misstatements). Front brakes still work, back ones do not.
Emergency brake is good. SAAB mechanic said that it needs the head gasket
machined. While the head is off, the timing chain can be replaced. Other
things - R&R axle boots; replace one motor mount, R&R tie rod ends & ball
joints.
All adds up to $1300-$1600 parts (not including the master cylinder,
which wasn't quoted at the time) and several thousand labor.
Someone who loves to work on SAABs could eventually get a nice car with
the classic SAAB body style. But would someone buy it? Should I sell it for
parts and, if so, how does that work? Another option is to donate it for a
tax deduction, but the brake issue makes me a little uncomfortable about
that. I don't want someone driving it off and hitting something (or
someone).
BTW, I'm a girl and don't know nuttin' much about any of this. So be
gentle with answers. I may be off-base in how I'm thinking about this, but
all I can do is ask the SAAB people - YOU!
Thanks.
Lynnie
