my 1980 900 T had lots of clunks do to misalligned muffler. The catalytic converter is a close fit just under the floor board. I had to loosen many clamps and shift the whole system around to get the optimum fit with max clearance. The rear hatch also is a source of clunks, but prob not yours since its comming from the front. But the muffler system, since its suspended from flexible links, can bang around, even though when you shake it at standstill it seems solid.
