I'm just the sort that would rather have my money working for me than for someone else. Taking your examples... what if you chucked the full $3,000 that you think you may need over 4 years into a nice term deposit with compound interest? You might have to cut your investing carreer short, and spend the money on the truck... but you might not. I guess the bottom line is that it's a personality thing, and a lifestyle thing.
