It is, and I've been using it both in garage and on the road. In a roadside tire change, I agree it would generally be the better tool, for the reasons you mentioned. For garage use, a floor jack would be faster and easier, which is why I'm considering getting one, and was soliciting opinions on what (and where) to get. BTW, my search produced the following site: http://www.hyjacks.com/ which sells floor jacks made by, among other manufacturers, http://www.norcoind.com/norco/norco.htm One interesting thing it says---I don't know whether this is true or not---is that, with the typical, cheap made-in-China floor jacks, you will likely get only about 10 uses before they start to leak; and that it is hard to find repair parts for them.
