I can attest to this- I've had that "maple syrup" smell in my '91 since I got it (about 3 years ago). Mine must have been a very slight leak, as I never noticed the loss of coolant, or puddling that others have indicated (that and I rarely use the heater here in So Cal). I never knew what was causing the smell (never figured that coolant could make a maple smell), until I saw these postings today. Unfortunately, my blower died 2 weeks ago. Have you replaced your core/blower, Ken? How big a pain was it to remove/replace?
