Occasionally I like to shift up without using the clutch. These are usually easy throws of the lever with foot off the gas, just sort of naturally selecting the next higher gear. My '86 900 8v transmission often balks and occasionally grinds when I try this. Is this type of shifting, even when the gears easily slip into place, hard on the transmission? Am I saving any appreciable wear on the clutch by not using it so often? I've got an 87 Nissan pickup truck (135k miles), and prior to the Saab, an 89 Dodge Shadow Turbo. Both of these cars are/were much easier to shift without using the clutch and the Shadow I down right abused for 90k miles without ever having any transmission problems. What's up with the Saab?
