Paul, It may not be the wiper switch. I had a problem with the headlamp wipers on my (previous) '86 900 (with carb!) where the wipers wouldn't park. I stripped and cleaned the wiper motor and that helped. The Windscreen wiper motor has two sets of electrical contacts; one for fast and the other for slow and park. If yours runs only on fast, it looks like the motor is at fault. you might (after checking fuses etc.) try checking the motor connectors and failing that strip and rebuild the motor itself. Check the condition of the carbon brushes on the motor. 3 in total, one for fast, one for slow and one ground (shared). There is also a park mechanism and it's possible that the switch contacts here may be at fault. The park mechanism consists of a rotating disc with a lug that opens the switch at the correct position. It's usually positioned on the final drive section of the wiper gearbox (didn't know a wiper motor had a gearbox did ya!). Alternatively, you could get a loan of a motor and just connect it (you don't need to mount it up) and see if everything works then. But I always prefer to fiddle with them first (sometimes I break them entirely and have to shell out for a new bit, but mostly I get the thing fixed and save on the deal). If you want to do your own maintenance, get the Haynes manual for the car. Good advise, clear steps and all the electrical wiring diagrams. I found the '73 to '87 manual nicer to use than the '88 on version, but they're not expensive and you could get both.
