Well controlled tests early in the century by a fellow named Harry Ricardo were able to control detonation (not preignition!!) by richening the mixture as much as 60% over stoichometric. By using water injection he was able to lean the fuel mixture back to best fuel economy. "It will be noted that the total specific consumption of liquid, . i.e. fuel plus water, is not so very much greater than when running on a very rich mixture of fuel alone."
