On my '85 900, the temp knob is a smooth turn with no detent, but the air distribution switch does have a little ball/spring assembly. If that's what let go, you will have to pull off the fascia to get to the switch. The temp control rod is a simple slip fit on both ends. But I acknowledge in advance that the '83 could be a whole different animal. Landlocked in Utah, dreamin' of the Islands...
