Could be the hall effect sensor behind the pulley on the crankshaft. '89's were a problem, but usually they either just didn't work because they were dead or the engine would run rough because the magnet was loose and the timing was jumping around too much. I have seen them intermittent though. It is hard to diagnose without a scope. Watch the tach when the engine stalls. Leave the car in gear and the clutch engaged while it's slowing down and see if the tach registers the engine rpm. If it doesn't, the hall effect is a possibility Pat
