My '84 900s has over 393,000 miles on it, and the transmission is still going strong. I bought it with 134,000 on it, but the previous owner had replaced the transmission sometime before I got it. I've been using Redline MTL almost the entire time, and with the winters we get here (occasionally down to -40 F), it made a huge difference - much better shifting in the winter than 10W30. I change the oil very 25,000 or so, and there is usually little or no metal accumulation on the drain plug magnet. I talked to Redline about the zinc depletion story, and their representative (from marketing, no doubt....) indicated that the chemist who developed Redline MTL did it for his 900 & 9000. I guess the point that I'm trying to make is that this business about zinc depletion is speculation - how would one go about determining what destroyed a particular transmission anyway?
