I bought a 1988 9000T in 1993 (which I still have 65 K miles later) and had to replace the auto box after a few months. Apparently something wrong with the governer that would have eaten a hole through the casing if left for long. According to the auto transmission specialist who replaced it, this is a design fault made worse by the power of the turbo (marginal for this box) and they can go at anything from 30 K to 100 K miles. Last year I had to replace the box again. This time due to an internal radiator leak letting water into the auto transmission fluid. By the time I'd noticed and replaced the radiator (which incorporates the fluid cooler) the water had started to dissolve the brake bands and clutch linings. This blocks the filter and you lose drive. Only cure is new box. If I'd known I'd have bought a manual!
