I had a 1984 900 S and it did the same thing. It was the brakes and happened when I applied the brakes in reverse. The caliper was loose, or I should say the caliper had a small amount of movement. This only happened in reverse and never caused any problem. A simple check would be to remove the front wheels and try to move the caliper, one if not both probably have some movement.
