I don't know if you had the car since '87, but when I got mine in '86 I asked the same question at the dealer. The central vent supplies cold air. If you have air conditioning, you should have noticed that this is where the cold air comes out . Close the central vent if you want to stay warm in the winte.. "Charles H.
