my 12 year old car has a constant mildew smell, worse in the summer. tried spraying anti mold stuff threw the vents, stuff to kill odors, didn't help. got 3 ideas but not sure who knows? 1. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, THE SMELL IS PROBABLY COMING FROM THE PADING UNDER THE CARPET. THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO TAKE THE SEATS OUT AND REMOVE THE CARPET. THEN SPRAY THE ELL OT OF THAT PAD W/ A 10% BLEACH 90% WATER SOLUTION, THEN LET IT DRY COMPLETELY . FINALY, SPRAY THE HELL OUT OF THE PAD AND THE CARPET W/ FEBREZE. I DID THIS LAST MAY AND IT REALLY KILLED THE SMELL. IT WAS WOTH NOT HAVING CARPET FOR A FEW DAYS. 2. known problem.....what I do with my car is for the last few minutes of my trip, I turn off the A/C and run the fan on high. This will remove any condesation in the system (from the A/C) and will eventually get rid of the smell...practice that routinely and it will be fine. In the mean time, spray some lysol in the vents to help out. 3. Once a week try running the car on Rec. mode, full fan speed and full heat for 30 minutes. All doors and windows must be shut during this time too. Kind of cooks the mold spores which prefer cooler temps.
