Most of the really bad transmissions were in the early 90's cars. I would try and get the service history for this car and see how often/regularly the transmission fluid was flushed, and that would be a major factor in my decision. If the fluid is bright red currently that is a good sign. If the car shifts smoothly, that's a good sign. If those things are there and you see that the trans was flushed every 15-20K, you could be looking at 20-30k left on it.
