In '88 they added a water-cooling system to the turbo, significanly increasing its reliability. It works too: you should see the difference in the temperature gauges on my '85 and a friend's '88. Also by '88 a lot of other things had been upgraded (brakes, suspension, etc.), and, of course, they're generally quite a bit more than the older models, but still very reasonable. If I was going to buy another Saab it would be an '88 to '93 900 Turbo (and when my '85 finally dies I will). HTH.
