hello, almost every automaker still suggests a break-in period. generally around 500 miles (approx 830 km for you backwards folk out there ;-), and never "lugging" the engine down, while constantly varying engine rpm (at least a little bit +/- 100-200 rpm), and usually not very high rpm either. the fit and tolerance of modern engines is much better then it used to be, but you still want them to break-in perfectly mated in the full range of motion and expansion (heat). as for the oil to use - a good petroleum base (Castrol GTX, etc - just not Pennzoil), which has lower protective properties and will allow the wear to occur properly. at the end of the period change the oil and filter (and i like to use a motor flush like Gunk Motor Flush) and put in whatever you intend to use on a regular basis. some companies at this point let it go, and others recommend your 2nd change (1st of the normal fluid/filter) be at 1/2 the normal interval. then go from there. i personally tend toward the conservative side and follow the most rigorous/frequent methods for the sake of thoroughness. anyone else? -- Nate t.
