Don - I just did this exercise and found that the answer appears to be more economic than technical, i.e. Is it *worth* it? If you go from fossil oil and 3000 mile changes to synthetic and 5000 mile changes (and do the work yourself) the overall cost is 50% higher per mile, but ultimately, about $15 per year at a nominal 12k milesper year. Modern synthetics don't have any noticable leaking problems etc. There are some caveats about using them in the transmission tho (Saab has a flush procedure). Quasimotors and Townsend's web site has a good discussion on the subject. But keep in mind that synthetics won't *reverse* the wear of 100,000 miles either. The 100k you mention isn't a terrible amount of mileage on a Saab, and if you want to look at 200k, I'd say go synthetic. I just switched the new 9000 I picked up with 40k miles to Mobil-1, primarily because of the turbo and hot climate I live in. This wsa an easy decision as I intend to see 200k miles with this car. 500 miles so far and you can't tell the difference. Dave
