Actually, I'm told that it is better to change manually (on the automatic transmission) - and I find that when towing my espresso trailer it's better to keep it in 3rd and manually shift to 4th when the road conditions allow, and back to 3rd manually, rather than letting the auto do it. I don't know why it's better, was advised that, and practice it.
