Remove the whole kit. It is more work, but the split boots are not so good at sealing. Also, it allows you to completely disassemble and inspect it to see if anything needs replacing. If the boot just split, it is probably OK. If it has been split for a while, grit, water and salt may be ground in the grease and has worn the CV joint.
