The reverse gear mod for the c900 ('79-93) is completely different than for the NG900. I performed this modification on one of my '92's It is fine 1.5 yrs later. One other source of the popping out may be the front engine mount. If there is a lot of play here, it can pop it out of gear as well. The NG900 had a shift mechanism change in the '97 model year (IIRC) which made selection a bit better. This new style can be retrofitted to an older model (94-96), but it is not simple and not recommended for the faint of heart (some cutting required).
