Hi Larry, A few months ago I "lost" my '88 9000T. I looked at both used 9-3's and 9-5's. I went with a '01 9-3SE for it's hatch, 5spd. (couldn't find a 5spd 9-5), and price. In my opinion, neither the 9-3 nor the 9-5 are as well or solidly built as the older Saabs. In fact, there are so many shared components (interior, wheels, etc... ) between the 9-3 and 9-5 that build quality concerns/differences between the two models aren't really relevant. Plus I think the Swede's work ethic doesn't slack-off due to model type. Anyway, the 9-3's turbo has been a blast; much more responsive than my '88. Honestly, it drives like a go-kart; especially fun in the hills/curves (good "pull"/suspension). Only problem I've had was when the turbo's "feeder" tube's clamps blew off while I was on the interstate (full system shut-down; no damage). Mileage has been about 19 mpg in town, 23 on the highway. If you need a versatile urban-hauler, then I'd recommend the 9-3. If you need a puesdo-lux cruiser-sedan, then go for the 9-5. Thats my two cents worth. :o) -- J.E.
