This happened on my '96 9000 CSE 2.3LPT a few months ago. I too checked the fuse, which was ok, so I thought it must be the instrument or the cable, so I drove the car to work. Part way there I lost the ability to select 1st or 2nd gear, reason being that part of the speedo drive had disintegrated and fallen into the gearbox, jamming the selector mechanism. If the warranty company hadn't picked up part of the tab it would have cost me around £800 (including clutch replacement). Not a fun experience!
