Steel rims are cheaper because steel is cheaper than alloy, they're much easier to manufacture and also made in far bigger quantities (basically every car is delivered with them from stock). Funny thing is that they are better in almost every respect (mechanical, durability etc.) except for weight (just slightly heavier, alloy weighs less, but needs more material for strength) and looks, although i've seen some ugly alloy wheels in my lifetime ;-) -- Zweef
