I get 2 years out of my snows, and 2 years out of my summer tires. That's driving about 100 miles a day, mixed rural/highway/city miles. Yes, the one-time cost of 4 steel wheels for the snowtires is the only added expense. Not getting in a crash because of unsafe tires is worth the 200 bucks for 4 rims, in my opinion. Compared to the cost of the car, having the right tires adds a trivial amount of cost to driving.
