Since we're now very safety conscious and discussing air bags, I should mention that the VW beetle was something of a death trap. Poor handling due to swing rear axles; easy to spin on a corner. Petrol (gas) tank in the front, virtually on your knees. But the car was simple and reliable, and not much else around in those days.
