James, Look at the heater distribution diagram. There are 2 heat selections (on my '91 at least). The one which is just a down arrow is heat only and no center cold bypass. The one with the down arrow with the small block above it is cold air in the center vent. This is in the owner's manual, though they may have changed this around over the years.
