Jack and support the car
    Make sure the stand on the driver's side is behind the suspension attachment point and the suspension bracket

Disconnect battery cables

Remove washer fluid reservoir after unplugging the pump from the grommet

Disconnect wires from terminal block on front of battery holder

Remove battery holder

Pre-93 cars: Remove air filter housing

Pre-93 cars: Remove AMM

Remove turbo inlet pipe

Remove fender trim piece and the front part of fender liner

Disconnect backup light switch connector 

Disconnect battery ground cable from end of trans

Pinch off slave cylinder hose and disconnect it

Disconnect speedometer 
        Pre-93 cars: Unscrew the sending unit from the transmission
       
93 and later: Disconnect the plug just above the sending unit 

 Pre-93 cars: Disconnect shift rod coupler (only the two inner nuts)

Pre-93 cars: Remove starter motor
93 and later: Remove the rear starter motor bolt and nut only

Support engine from above

Remove transmission mount bolt

Remove all but one of the nuts/bolts that hold transmission to engine:

Pry off  "e" clip from the top of  ball joint stud

Remove ball joint pinch bolt

Slacken two pivot bolts/nuts on the subframe

Remove sway bar link nut 

Remove sway bar bushing bracket bolts (steering wheel full left)

Remove the subframe bolts and nuts from the driver's side (except leave the 16 mm stay rod bolt)

Position jack under subframe half and apply pressure.

Remove 16 mm stay rod bolt

Jack subframe half down (lever the ball joint stud out)

Remove subframe pivot bolts/nuts, then drop the subframe half down and pull it out

Store all subframe fasteners from whence they came

93 and later: Remove the nut from the taper pin, then drive the taper pin out

Glue sheet metal spacer in place at front suspension bracket mount point

Disconnect driver's side inner drive (tripode) joint

Bolt hoist chain to top side of trans lifting eye  
    93 and later: Install metal hanger pieces onto transmission for chain attachment

Remove final trans-to-engine nut. 

Pull the trans off the engine, then lower it out of car (check disengagement of intermediate shaft from trans)
