Cranks But Won't Start Even After Replacing Fuel Pump

Recently on three occasions when my 2000 Saab 9 3 Turbo Convertible has failed to start again after running for a short drive - cranked but wouldn't start. The first two times after waiting a few minutes the car cranked fine on its own. However, the third time when it didn't I contacted my mechanic who discovered the fuel pump was not running when he attempted to start it. Prior to this issue, it never hesitated to crank nor ever stalled, but on the first occasion before I realized it wouldn't crank I noticed my remote lock/unlock was not working. I trust my mechanic but he’s not familiar with Saab. At his request I purchased a new fuel pump which after being installed has not helped – it turns over and you can hear the fuel pump working but no gas is getting to the fuel filter – mechanic thinks the new fuel pump may be bad. Anybody got any ideas about what’s wrong? I’ve got a week to come up with some solutions while my mechanic is on vacation. Thanks.
