I haven't been around here in a while, but wanted to give everyone an update . . .

I have a '99 9-5 SE lpt, auto, 59K miles. Purchased on Halloween night 2002. Believe it or not, I *still* have two weeks of my CPO warranty left.

So far this year, I have had the engine replaced (sludge issue) and the DI cassette replaced completely free of charge (including free oil with the new engine . . .).

My SEL came on tuesday morning, so i took it in that night. It was diagnosed as a bad seal on the gas cap. Anyhow, i casually mentioned that the A/C doesn't seem to get as cold as it did last summer. So . . . they replaced a valve, called me and told me she was ready. 10 mins later, another call--they noticed a wisp of smoke from the tailpipe and wanted to keep it another day.

I called today to check in--turbo was apparently bad. Replaced. A/C compressor--bad. Replaced.

I'm just guessing here, but based on the $9000 figure I was quoted as the billable cost for the engine replacement, i'm up in the $13,000 range in terms of repairs this year alone (assuming $2500 for the turbo and $1500 for the compressor).

There are tons of other things that have been fixed under warranty over the past 3 years--i can't even remember them all--the list is very long. And there has never, ever, ever been an issue, a question, a grey area, etc. in terms of coverage. Simply put, if it's broken, they fix it with a smile and give it back to you clean.

The moral of the story: if you are buying used and buying from the dealer, pay the extra $ and go the CPO route. All told, i think it added about $800 more to the selling price. As you can see, i'm just a few $ ahead.
