History: On June 26th I bought a 2002 Aero wagon, 32K, out of warranty on time, manual transmission, Saab reseller w/ good reputation. Purchased as-is, no warranty based on low miles, condition of car, reputation of reseller.

Driving it home, I got 300 miles into the 380 miles trip and the low oil pressure light came on. Stopping at closest exit, I heard the dreaded top-end ticking/knocking. Towed 40 miles ot Flow Saab/Saturn/Hummer in Greensboro, NC. Diagnosis - sludged engine.

Saab will not cover it under 8yr/100K sludge program, citing "service records show earliest oil change was at 18K".

Contacted previous owner (south FL), only has records for a 30day/2500 mile service, then 14K, 18K, 25K, 28K, 32K. He *might* be able to locate a missing record through credit card receipts.

Problem is that the original dealership closed and the records were supposed to be sent on to the next dealership. The new dealership is reported to be less than competent and is not very friendly (IMHO).

Update: I've since moved the car to Swedish Imports in Durham, NC based on recommendations from Saabnet posters (for Swedish Imports and against Flow Saab). Repairs are proceeding (at almost $2K less than Flow Saab quoted).

Unless the missing 10K oil change shows up, I am forced to pay for new short block, turbo, & rebuilt head, and try to make a case with Saab for covering this repair with what records I have. If they *do* cover it, I am then off to buy a lottery ticket.

If they do not, well, I guess I've got a 4 year old car with a "new" engine. My wife and I are almost full circle, though - the joy of finding our "dream" car, the disappointment and sadness of having a sludged engine and 1/3 extra $$$ to repair it, and finally hopeful anticipation at getting the car on the road and enjoying it.

We have no legal recourse with Saab USA or the Saab reseller, other than their respective goodwill and reputations. To be honest, I have more confidence in the latter of the two, but I may yet be surprised.
