I think wheel mounted paddles are almost useless...

I have an '04 9-5 Arc sedan with the 5-speed AT and wheel mounted "manual-matic" controls.

IMHO,wheel mounted paddles are almost useless on a passenger car. As originally invented for race cars going around an oval where the steering wheel is never turned more than a few degrees, they work great. But in daily driving, there are a number of situations where (like a starting right turn from a stoplight) where you would want to simultaneously accelerate, turn the wheel, and shift and the whole thing is awkward as hell. I've found the more common shifter controlled manual-matic controls much more useful.

That said... in general I think that manual-matic controls are a cheap "gee-whiz" feature that few people ever use.

And having the transmission overide manual inputs like it does on the 9-5 is maddening!

I agree... sport mode works better. (If only Saab would wire things so we didn't have to press the button every time we shift into D.
