...my 9000 experience teaches me that the usual BPV symptom is stalling on deceleration, more than simply at idle per se.

But you're right -- I'm not too concerned about the stalling issue, just that the "stalls on turns" symptom is interesting and wacky. Thought maybe it'd shown up here before.

The turbo is what's giving me pause at the moment. It seems V6 turbos, being cast into the exhaust manifold, are harder to come by and quite expensive, unless I can find a rebuilt unit someplace. But a quick scan of my usual parts sources hasn't been very encouraging.

My worst fear is picking up a cheap project car that incrementally works its way up to not-so-cheap, by means of parts (turbo), and perhaps lots of expensive diagnostics once it's on the road.

I can bail out and part the car out if the turbo's in normal price range, but not if it's $1500 or more. At that point a lot of labor is involved -- I've done it before -- and you can't easily sell stuff you can box and ship. For my life, it wouldn't be worth the pain at that stage.
